A Mean Goblin -The Tragic End of the Goblin Chieftain Who Let Mischief Become Evil
When people think of Korean goblins, or Dokkaebi, they often imagine playful beings who love buckwheat jelly, enjoy wrestling through the night, and sometimes get tricked by humans into giving away treasures. They are mischievous, but somehow lovable.
Yet, long ago, deep within the damp valleys of the Taebaek Mountains, there lived a very different kind of goblin.
Their leader was known as Heukgak ( HornBlack).
He earned this name because the single horn growing from his forehead was as black as burnt charcoal. Today's tale tells of this fearsome goblin chieftain who grew stronger by feeding on human greed, only to be destroyed by the very greed he cherished.
1. The Goblin Who Stole Human Fortune
Unlike ordinary goblins, who merely played tricks on travelers, Heukgak possessed a far darker power.
He stole people's fortune and even their memories.
Wherever Heukgak appeared, villages slowly withered. Fields that once yielded abundant harvests turned barren overnight. Bright children forgot everything they had learned, and loving families became consumed by hatred and suspicion.
The tears and despair of ordinary people were sweeter to him than the finest wine.
As time passed, his power grew stronger. Even the other goblins living in the mountains feared him and became his followers. Using his authority as chieftain, Heukgak forced them to commit even crueler acts against humans.
To the villagers below, the black-horned goblin was no longer a mischievous spirit. He had become a living disaster.
2. A Mysterious Wanderer Arrives
One late autumn, as fear spread throughout the village, a young wandering scholar arrived carrying nothing but a worn cloth pack.
His name was Yeon.
He quietly sat inside the village tavern, listening as people spoke of the strange misfortunes that had befallen them.
"It's Heukgak again," one villager sighed. "Old Kim's ox coughed up blood all night before dying, and this morning Lord Choi's granary was found completely empty."
Without saying a word, Yeon reached into his pack and produced a small silk pouch.
At first glance, it looked ordinary. Yet a faint crimson glow seemed to leak from within.
Finally, Yeon spoke.
"I will meet this goblin chieftain. This pouch alone will be enough."
Everyone begged him not to go, but his eyes never wavered.
That very night, he climbed alone into the dark mountains where even the moonlight could not reach.
3. A Dangerous Wager
Halfway up the mountain, a foul smell filled the air.
A gigantic shadow emerged from the darkness.
Wrapped in animal hides and glaring with glowing yellow eyes, Heukgak blocked the path.
"What a foolish human," the goblin laughed. "You've walked straight into my hands."
As the goblin raised his massive club, Yeon smiled calmly and lifted the silk pouch.
"So you're Heukgak, the goblin who feeds on human fortune and desire? Inside this pouch lies the most concentrated human greed in the world. Compared to this, the despair you've tasted until now is nothing."
Heukgak's eyes sparkled with desire.
Goblins, by nature, cannot resist curiosity or a wager.
Even their mighty chieftain was no exception.
"Then hand it over at once!"
Yeon slowly shook his head.
"Not without a bet. If you can consume everything inside this pouch, my life—and the pouch itself—are yours. But if you fail, you must never descend from this mountain again."
Certain that no mere human could deceive him, Heukgak burst into laughter and accepted the challenge.
4. Pride Becomes the Perfect Trap
Yeon tossed the silk pouch toward him.
Without hesitation, Heukgak untied the knot and looked inside.
The next instant—
A horrifying scream echoed throughout the mountains.
"AAAAAAARGH!"
Inside the pouch was not human greed.
It was a polished mirror.
But this was no ordinary mirror.
Its surface had been coated with the fresh blood of a white horse, a substance that goblins feared above all else.
The moment Heukgak looked into the mirror, he faced both the cursed power of the white horse's blood and the horrifying reflection of his own monstrous face.
To goblins, the blood of a white horse was a deadly poison, capable of burning both body and spirit.
Blinded by endless greed, Heukgak had unknowingly brought the deadliest curse directly before his own eyes.
Black smoke poured from his body as he writhed across the ground in unbearable agony.
5. The Legend of the Burnt Broom
Looking down at the fallen goblin, Yeon spoke quietly.
"The one who coveted the greed of others has been destroyed by his own."
The mighty goblin chieftain began to shrink.
The darkness that had filled his body slowly faded away.
When it was over, nothing remained except an old, half-burned broom, blackened at the tip.
The goblins who had secretly watched their leader's defeat fled deep into the mountains, never daring to return.
The following morning, the villagers discovered the charred broom lying at the mountain entrance.
Yeon, however, had already disappeared without a trace.
From that day forward, no mysterious disasters ever struck the village again.
The harvests returned.
Families found peace once more.
And prosperity slowly came back to the land.
There are enemies that cannot be defeated by strength alone.
Sometimes wisdom is far sharper than any weapon, especially against those consumed by greed.
The goblin chieftain who mocked humanity was ultimately defeated by the very thing he underestimated most—a clever human and a simple silk pouch.
So if you ever wander through a lonely mountain path and happen upon a blackened, broken broom...
Do not pick it up.
