Legend of the Golden Pig

A mysterious story that punishes greed and brings blessings

The Legend of the Golden Pig in Folk Painting: A story illustration capturing three scenes—the woodcutter's discovery, the imprisonment caused by greed, and the wife's forgiveness and salvation.

Once upon a time, in a deep mountain village, lived a couple with very kind hearts. Although they were not well-off, they were ordinary people who lived each day faithfully, cherishing and relying on one another. They did not possess much, but because they knew how to be grateful for even the smallest joys, the villagers also looked upon them with warmth.

One day, the husband went deep into the mountains to gather wood as usual. As he walked through the forest, where only the sound of mountain birds filled the silence, he stopped in his tracks before an astonishing sight he had never seen in his life.

In the middle of a forest bathed in warm sunlight, a large pig, its entire body shining dazzlingly like pure gold, lay peacefully asleep.

"No... what on earth is that? A golden pig in the world."

The husband couldn't even breathe properly out of surprise.

The golden pig was not merely a rare animal. It was a mysterious being from legends passed down by the village elders for a long time, a powerful guardian spirit known to see through both the goodness and greed in a person's heart.

A moment later, the golden pig quietly gazed at the husband. Its eyes held a deep meaning, as if it knew everything. Soon, the golden pig vanished like mist, leaving behind only a small gold nugget in its place.

The husband carefully brought the gold nugget home, and the couple sold it to escape the poverty that had persisted for a long time. Although they were not very wealthy, they were able to relieve their worries about making a living, and at first, the couple was deeply grateful for the blessing of the golden pig.

However, the human heart is truly easily swayed.

At first, my husband had vowed, "This grace alone is enough. Let us continue to live faithfully," but gradually, different thoughts began to bloom in his heart.

If I go back to that mountain, wouldn't I be able to get more gold?

That small greed grew bigger and bigger as time went by.

My husband no longer worked diligently. Every day he would climb the mountain and wander only in search of traces of the golden pig, and he began to chase only the dream of becoming rich overnight rather than working for his family. Before I knew it, greed had taken root in his eyes instead of gratitude.

One day, after some time had passed, the golden pig appeared before him again.

This time, it was the entrance to a massive cave. Inside, dazzling gold was piled high like a mountain, and the light was intense enough to make one lose their reason.

The moment he saw the gold, the husband forgot everything.

Forgetting the existence of the golden pig, the grace he had initially received, and his own resolve, he ran frantically toward the gold and began scooping it up with both hands.

Right at that moment.

A deep, low voice echoed inside the cave.

Excessive greed eventually turns good fortune into misfortune.

Suddenly, with a huge roar, the entrance to the cave was blocked by a large rock.

There was nothing but pitch-black darkness all around.

Only then did the trapped husband realize how foolish he had been. The greed he had sought to obtain easily, rather than through hard work, had ultimately imprisoned him in the deepest darkness.

The husband shed endless tears, repenting for his wrongdoings.

Meanwhile, the wife, who was waiting for her husband at home, set out into the mountains in search of him with a worried heart when he did not return even as night fell.

After wandering for a long time, the wife arrived in front of the cave and, upon hearing her husband's voice, knelt before the rock.

"It was all because of our foolish greed. Please forgive my husband. From now on, we will abandon greed and live honestly."

His wife's sincere tears and deep repentance finally moved the Golden Pig's heart.

Shortly after, the huge rock that had been firmly closed slowly split open, opening a path, and my husband was able to get out safely.

Holding his wife's hand, the husband firmly swore that he would never again harbor vain desires.

From that day on, the couple lived even more faithfully than before. They did not keep the blessings that came to them to themselves but shared them with neighbors in need, and they personally demonstrated the fact that honesty and gratitude bring greater happiness than greed.

As time passed, people passed this story down, calling it the 'Legend of the Golden Pig'.

So, even to this day, our ancestors regarded the golden pig not merely as a being that brings wealth, but as a symbol that bestows true blessings upon those who guard against greed and maintain a good heart.
