One day, the blind father falls into a stream and is rescued by an old monk. The monk tells him that if he offers 300 sacks of rice to Buddha, his sight will be restored. Not wanting to be a burden to his daughter, the desperate father accidentally makes the promise.

Upon learning this Shim Cheong makes a heart-wrenching decision. She sells herself as a human sacrifice to merchants crossing the treacherous Indangsu Sea to secure the 300 sacks of rice for her father. Arriving at the raging sea, ShimCheong covers her head with her skirt and throws herself into the dark depths.

This scene leaves readers heartbroken. Her sacrifice is not just an act of obedience, but the most noble and altruistic form of love-willingly giving up everything for a loved one.

3. A Miracle Blooming as a Lotus and a Tearful Reunion

ShimCheong's absolute devotion moves the heavens and the sea. Saved by the Dragon King of the Sea, she stays in the underwater palace before returning to the surface wrapped inside a giant, glowing lotus flower. Discovered by sailors, the lotus is presented to the Emperor, and Shim Cheong ultimately becomes the Empress.

However, even as Empress, her heart remains solely with her lonely father. She hosts a grand feast for all the blind men in the country to find him. On the last day of the feast, she finally reunites with her father, who arrives in a shabby state.

Hearing his daughter's voice, the blind father, desperate to see the daughter he thought was dead, miraculously opens his eyes. This miraculous moment created by blind love delivers a powerful message: even in the deepest despair, true love and hope will eventually shine through.

4. The Message ShimCheong Throws at Modern Society

From a modern perspective, ShimCheong's sacrifice might seem extreme. However, what we should focus on is not the 'method of sacrifice', but the 'value of unconditional love' underlying it.
