A Love Spanning the Milky Way: The Untold Story of Gyeonwu and Jiknyeo

Have you ever escaped  the city lights on a hot summer night to gaze quietly up at the starry sky? If you look closely, you can see the Milky Way flowing like a river of stars, with two exceptionally bright stars shining on either side. In the West, these stars are known as Altair and Vega, but in the East, they are the main characters of a heartbreaking love story passed down for thousands of years: 'Gyeonwu and Jiknyeo'(The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl). Beyond a simple fairy tale, this myth resonates deeply with themes of responsibility, the weight of love, and desperate longing. 

1. The Heavenly Weaver and the Diligent Cowherd

Long age, the jade Emperor, the supreme ruler of the universe and the heavens, had a granddaughter named Jiknyeo whom he cherished dearly. Jiknyeo was the most skilled weaver in the heavenly kingdom. The exquisite silk woven from her delicate fingertips became the brilliant, multi-colored clouds of the early morning and the breathtaking red sunsets of the evening. All the beauty of the sky was born on her loom.

Meanwhile, across the Milky Way-the massive river of stars spanning the heavens-lived a steadfast young man named Gyeonwu. He was a 🐄cowherd tasked with tending to the sacred cattle of the heavens. Rain⛆ of shine☀, he never missed a day of carefully feeding and caring for the animals, and his diligence was well-known throughout the heavenly realm.

2. A Fateful Love Blessed by the Jade Emperor

The Jade Emperor highly valued Gyeonwu's upright and warm character, silently fulfilling his duties. Believing there was no better partner for his beloved granddaughter, the Emperor arranged for Gyeonwu and Jiknyeo to be 💑married.

From the moment they met, the two felt their souls drawn together. The young couple, who had previously been entirely devoted to their separate lives across the Milky Way, tied the knot and spent days happier than anyone else in the universe. Their laughter echoed throughout the heavens, and it seemed their love would remain beautiful forever.

3. Blinded by the Sweetness of Love, Forgetting Worldly Order

But perhaps all tragedies begin with a love that it too deep and intense. Gyeonwu and Jiknyeo became so infatuated with each other that they completely forgot the heavy responsibilities and duties they were supposed to bear.

Because Jiknyeo no longer sat at her loom, the multi-colored clouds ceased to bloom in the sky, and the beautiful sunsets turned to a dull, ashen gray. The world's skies lost their light. Gyeonwu, too, was so busy spending time with Jiknyeo that he neglected the cattle. Exhausted from hunger, the sacred cows stampeded recklessly across the heavens, causing massive chaos. The beauty and order of the world were collapsing miserably due to their negligence.

4. The wrath of the Emperor and a Separation Across the Stars 

Watching the order of the world unravel, the Jade Emperor finally unleashed his pent-up fury. Abandoning their crucial duties to the world for the sake of personal feelings was an unforgivable sin.

The Emperor handed down the most severe punishment imaginable. Gyeonwu was banished to the far eastern edge of the Milky Way, and Jiknyeo to the western edge. Between them lay a deep, massive river of stars that could never be crossed, no matter how hard one tried to swim. Condemned to an immense distance where they couldn't even see each other's faces, they were forced to live out their days in endless yearning. However, taking pity on their true love, the emperor granted them permission to meet just one day a year: on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month (known as Chilseok). 

 5. The Miracle of Ojakgyo: A bridge Forged by Sacrifice 

Time passed, and the desperately awaited July 7th finally arrived. Gyeonwu and Jiknyeo rushed to the banks of the Milky Way, but facing he raging currents of the cosmic river, they could only shed  tears. There was no boat or bridge to cross. The😭 tears of sorrow shed by the two lovers poured down to Earth, causing massive floods.

The animals on Earth faced a terrible crisis due to the sudden deluge. Upon learning that the flood was caused by the tragic story of Gyeonwu and Jiknyeo in the heavens, all the crows and magpies in the world took flight in unison to help the couple. Tens of thousands of birds linked their heads and wings together over the Milky Way to form a colossal bridge. This bridge, created through noble sacrifice, is known as 'Ojakgyo' (The Bridge of Crows and Magpies).

6. The Secret Hidden in the Rain on Chilseok

Reunited on Ojakgyo after a long year, Gyeonwu and Jiknyeo embraced tightly, shedding tears of overwhelming joy. However, as the short day came to an end and they had to turn back, promising to meet again the following year, they clutched their breaking hearts and poured out tears of profound sorrow.

Therefore, since ancient times, the rain that falls during the day on Chilseok (July 7th of the lunar calendar) is said to be the 'tears of joy' shed by Gyeonwu and Jiknyeo upon their reunion. Conversely, the rain that falls at dawn the day after Chilseok represents their 'tears of sorrow' as they leave their fleeting encounter behind to part once again. there is also an endearing legend that if you see crows and magpies with missing feathers on their heads after Chilseok, it is because Gyeonwu and Jiknyeo stepped on their heads to cross the bridge.

On either side of the Milky Way crossing the night sky, two stars-Altair and Vega-still shine toward each other. The radiant love of these two, who never gave up on each other even in the face of harsh trials and the vast galaxy, will surely be shining in your night sky as well.
