1. The Night When Even the Moon Lost Its Way

Nestled deep within the mountains was a small village where night brought an almost unnatural silence. Whenever the moon disappeared behind thick clouds, the entire valley was swallowed by darkness so complete that it seemed to cut the village off from the rest of the world. The only sounds that lingered were the rustling of branches in the night breeze and the distant chorus of unseen insects.

As soon as the sun slipped beyond the mountains, every household bolted its doors and retreated indoors. To the villagers, the night belonged to things best left unseen.

Yet there was one man who never feared the darkness.

Some called him an eccentric. Others laughed and compared him to the village fool who wandered wherever his feet carried him. He paid no attention to their whispers. In truth, the darkness that terrified everyone else was the only place where his restless heart could find peace.

That night, as on countless nights before, he walked without any destination.

Eventually, his wandering brought him to an old pond at the edge of the village—a quiet place that few people visited anymore. On ordinary nights, the still water reflected the silver glow of the moon.

But tonight was different.

High above the mountains hung a moon unlike any he had ever seen.

It was completely black.

No pale light escaped its surface. It hovered silently in the heavens like an endless pool of ink, casting an eerie presence over the world. Time itself seemed to stand still beneath its shadow.

The man stopped in his tracks.

A chill crept down his spine as an old story, one he had heard from the village elders as a child, resurfaced in his memory.

"On the night when the Black Moon rises, the deepest longing finds its way back to the world of the living."

He had always dismissed it as nothing more than an old folktale.

Yet standing beneath that impossible sky, the words no longer felt like a legend.

They felt like a promise.
